Northern Lights Express Passenger Rail Project

HMMH was responsible for noise and vibration analysis throughout the environmental assessment phase of this proposed high-speed passenger rail project. The Northern Lights Express Passenger Rail Project will follow the existing freight rail line from the Minneapolis Transportation Interchange station to the City of Duluth, Minnesota. As is typically the case for projects that share freight tracks, significant noise impact would be expected from the loud horns that normally must be sounded as trains approach grade crossings. Thus, the primary noise mitigation measure recommended for this project was the establishment of Quiet Zones.

HMMH conducted ambient noise measurements as well as existing ground-borne vibration measurements throughout the study area. The measured data were used to define the existing noise and vibration conditions. A noise and vibration impact assessment was conducted in accordance with the guidelines set forth by the U.S. Federal Railroad Administration and the Federal Transit Administration.
