2025 Virtual Airport Noise Course

Are you an airport noise officer or aviation professional looking to master the complexities of airport noise? Join us for our annual Virtual Airport Noise Course, designed to provide a comprehensive, practical, and in-depth understanding of the issues you face every day.

Delivered virtually via Zoom, this course offers maximum flexibility with eight 1.5-hour modules spread over four days. This format allows you to gain essential knowledge while maintaining your work-life balance.

What You’ll Learn

Dive deep into the technical, legal, and practical issues that are critical to aviation noise management. The course will cover eight main topics, each in its own 1.5-hour module:

  • Acoustics (as applied to environmental analyses)
  • Aircraft Noise Terminology
  • Effects of Aircraft Noise on People
  • Federal Aviation Noise Regulations
  • Aircraft Noise Modeling
  • Noise Measurements
  • Airport Noise Management
  • Aviation Noise Mitigation

Course participants will receive an electronic copy of the course materials that support and expand on material covered in each module they attend. Participants may choose to attend any number of modules, with a discounted rate when attending four or more modules. A certificate will be provided to those who attend the full course.

Course Outline

DAY 1
Mon, Oct 6, 2025

Module 1: Acoustics
11:00-12:30 ET

Provides a thorough discussion of the mathematical description of aircraft noise – the acoustics that underlie the noise terminology we use on a daily basis. Specific topics will include sound pressure levels, decibels, human perception of sound, and sound propagation.

Module 2: Aircraft Noise Terminology
1:00-2:30 ET

Provides a discussion of the noise terminology most commonly used to describe aircraft noise. Specific measures will include the A-weighted decibel, Time Above, Sound Exposure Level, Equivalent Sound Level, Day-Night Average Sound Level, and Community Noise Equivalent Level.

DAY 2
Tues, Oct 7, 2025

Module 3: Effects of Aircraft Noise on People
11:00-12:30 ET

Covers the effects of aircraft noise on people, including both behavioral and health effects. We also will discuss federal and local guidelines for assessing the compatibility of aircraft noise with land use.

Module 4: Aircraft Noise Modeling
1:00-2:30 ET

Presents an overview of aircraft noise modeling techniques with a focus on the most recent version of the FAA's noise model, AEDT.

DAY 3
Wed, Oct 8, 2025

Module 5: Federal Aviation Noise Regulations
11:00-12:30 ET

Covers the federal noise regulations that govern the discussion of aircraft noise, including NEPA and Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), specifically Parts 36, 91, 150, and 161.

Module 6: Noise Measurements
1:00-2:30 ET

Includes techniques for making noise measurements near an airport, such as the factors that help determine when and where measurements should be made; how to make measurements; and reporting methodology.

DAY 4 -
Thurs, Oct 9, 2025

Module 7: Airport Noise Management
11:00-12:30 ET

Describes airport noise and operation monitoring systems and capabilities including design, specifications, and procurement, and most importantly, what to do with information collected through these monitoring systems. We will also discuss the role of the airport noise manager as liaison with the community.

Module 8: Aviation Noise Mitigation
1:00 - 2:30 ET

Provides an overview of aircraft noise mitigation, focusing on sound insulation program fundamentals. Discussion topics will include program eligibility, funding, and planning, and acoustical testing.

Who should Attend

HMMH’s virtual airport noise course is designed to be responsive to the needs of a variety of people involved in issues surrounding aviation noise, including:

  • Airport noise officers
  • Aviation planners
  • Reviewers of environmental documents containing noise exposure maps
  • Preparers of noise exposure maps, including environmental consultants

The HMMH Airport Noise Webinar series has been an excellent tool in furthering my understanding of a variety of topics. The team at HMMH does an exceptional and efficient job presenting these topics. I was given responsibility over my airport’s noise program and these courses give me a better understanding of the industry and make me more confident in my role. Airport noise is a complex topic and the webinar series breaks down the various topics into detailed but understandable chunks. Understanding how noise compatibility has developed in the industry, how noise effects individuals and communities, and best practices are all crucial for a successful noise program. This series is for anyone looking to learn new information and for seasoned professionals looking to refresh their knowledge of airport noise.
